Discovering Texture and Pattern within Cultural Artifacts

Since I can remember art has been a thriving passion of mine. Whether I’m collecting, designing or creating; I devote a lot of my time to my art, due to the enthusiasm of a challenge to create a unique and eye catching piece. Therefore an undergraduate course in textiles would open many doors in future career opportunities to follow my ambitions in life to work within retail designing and merchandising.

I have always loved the beauty of texture and pattern, and I knew I wanted to further my passion within my  project. For that reason I have decided to focus on cultural artifacts, as these objects are rich in both texture and pattern. This topic had diverse traditions and ethnicities, both fascinating and interesting to explore such as unique worshipping places, temples, mosques etc. My investigation into cultural patterns and textures led me to a variety of subject matter including architecture, jewelery and fabric. Research surrounding this helped me to interpret the different aspects of the cultures involved. I did this by visiting an Indian temple in Bradford, and several sari and jewellery shops, concentrating on the way Indian material is detailed.
